Possible Hard Drive Failure? Retrieve Files You Thought Were Gone Forever
At some time or another you will experience hard drive failure. The sad truth is hard drives just aren’t built to last forever. Backing up your data is important but another sad truth is most people do not make this a habit and it can be devastating to them in the event of hard drive failure. There can be three types of hard drive failure. First there are logical errors. With logical errors there is most likely nothing physically wrong with the hard drive. It may be through malicious programs such as malware as well as viruses which messed up the file system. Electronic failure can be the result of a power surge or spike that has damaged the controller board. In this event you will need to replace the hard drive. Addititionally there is mechanical failure where the internal components become damaged and in many instances the hard drive becomes inaccessible and will require replacement. Data software recovery tools will help you in order to retrieve data that might otherwise have been completely lost. Occasionally, this may just be files that have been deleted when the Recycle Bin was emptied, which you then realize later on shouldn't have been deleted, and other instances it will likely be data lost when there is hard drive failure. Data could be lost from the main drive of your computer system for a number of reasons, and in the vast majority of situations it may be recovered in one way or another.
Data recovery software operates by accessing parts of the hard drive which are not normally accessed by the computer. When data is permanently deleted, it is not usually removed completely from the hard drive. Rather, the files in the operating system which point to this data are changed or deleted. If you can use a special piece of software which can identify where the original data is still stored on the hard drive, it can be recovered and copied to another location.
The most important piece of disk data recovery advice you can ever be given is not to write any further data to the disk you are trying to retrieve data from. Although the data is never actually deleted from the system when you empty the Recycle Bin, the files which point to it are deleted. This leads the operating system to regard this data as permanently lost, and it will overwrite this data when it has new files to save. The moment you realize that something from the Recycle Bin needs to be saved, stop using the disk drive.
This means that you will need access to another computer to download and use the software you need. The best tool to use if you have one is a flash drive. You can plug this into the other computer, and download the data recovery software onto it. Then, you can unplug the flash drive from the computer, and plug it into the computer which has the data you want to retrieve. Now, you have effectively got new software installed on your computer, without having to download it to your main hard drive and risk overwriting your lost data.
The final steps are the ones which will hopefully retrieve your data. Simply run the recovery utility you have downloaded, and follow the on screen instructions. Navigate to where the lost files are and retrieve them. To avoid any possibility of conflicts with new data overwriting the old, don't re-save the data to your hard drive. Save it to your new flash drive instead. Only when you have a copy already saved should you attempt to save the file back to the original drive. This should complete a successful data software recovery.
