How To Make A Successful Data Format Recovery Without Professional Help

Data format recovery is usually possible, because the action of formatting a disk does not erase any of the data from the disk, just the data which tells the operating system which sector is which. When a disk is formatted, it is prepared so that the operating system is able to read from it, and write to it. The formatting process involves erasing any old data which was previously used to tell the system where the sectors were, and also a testing of the disk to make sure that there are no bad sectors.

It does have to be pointed out that the above comments apply only to a high level format, of the type which is routinely carried out by someone formatting a disk on their own home computer. There is another level of formatting which users hardly ever carry out, but which is usually carried out before a disk is boxed and shipped for sale. This lower level of formatting sets the parameters and properties for the disk, and if was carried out on a disk which had already been in use, it would wipe out all of the data.

The first thing you must do when you notice that data has been apparently lost is to stop using the hard drive. Any further addition to the contents of the drive could overwrite the data which has been apparently lost. When the operating system no longer believes that data is relevant, because it has been emptied from the Recycle Bin or because of some fault in the system, it will overwrite it permanently with other files. You need to prevent that by not adding any more files.

If you want to test out a free data recovery software program, download it to another computer, move it to a flash drive, and then plug that flash drive into the computer with the fault. Now, you can run the software utility from the flash drive. If it allows you to pick up your lost data, save it immediately on to the flash drive. This preserves the data, while you try to fix the formatting fault which led to the problem in the first place.

A more certain solution is to use dedicated paid software which deals specifically with this type of problem, but of course the importance of the data has to justify the expense. The same steps should be followed to get the software working on the computer. Don't ever download software directly onto the main computer's hard drive because you do not know what it will overwrite. The professional software has been designed specifically to walk you through the necessary steps to get your data retrieved, and to restore your operating system. It will be cheaper than paying a professional, and you will always have the software should you need another data format recovery.
